Mother’s Day–Free Printable

April 29, 2012

Mothers Day is right around the corner.  I really enjoy mothers day, even more so than my birthday.  I love that it is always on a Sunday – my pastor always make a point to recognize mothers.  Including the oldest and the one with the most children.  Motherhood is something so sweet and special to celebrate!

To help start the Mother’s Day celebration I made this cute printable.  I hope you like!

A Song…

April 24, 2012

I love how you can be having a terrible day and then a song comes on the radio or even just to your mind and reminds you that the Lord is right there.  Not only is He there ALL THE TIME, but He is willing to carry our burdens and when necessary to carry us.  I had a terrible evening yesterday which has carried over into my day today, but I heard this song this morning and it has truly lifted my spirit.

This is “Carry Me To The Cross” by Kutless

When the path is daunting
And every step exhausting
I'm not alone
I'm not alone, no, no
I feel you draw me closer
All these burdens on my shoulder
I'm not alone, I'm not alone
You pull me me from this place

Hellelujah
You carry me every day
You carry me all all the way
Hallelujah
You carry me to the
You carry me to the cross'

How your love has moved me, yeah
To the foot of all your glory
I'm not alone, I'm not alone
I'm not alone

Hallelujah
You carry me every day
You carry me all all the way
Hallelujah
You carry me to the
You carry me to the cross

All of these cities you have built
And every cathedral you have filled
To all of creation you gave life with your hands
And with those hands you comfort me
You lift me up from my knees
And carry me
You carry me
Hallelujah
You carry me every day
You carry me all all the way

Hallelujah
You carry me to the
You carry me to the cross
The cross
You carry me to the
You carry me to the cross

Easter Baskets

April 21, 2012

Our Easter morning was wild.  Most Sunday’s are wild… we normally rush out the door praying we make it on time!  Colton was sick this morning so we had no time to open Easter baskets until after naptime later that day.

DSC00339

Colton loves playing with his Papaw’s binoculars so when I ran across a pair in the toy isle I knew I had to get them for him!  He [and Claire] play with them almost every day.  He was super excited about his kite and puzzle too!

DSC00348

Claire’s basket was full of books and a watering can.  The watering can made its way to the bath tub where it has been ever since.

DSC00341

It did not take long for her to become enthralled in her books.

What a difference a year makes!

Warm Spring Days

April 20, 2012

The warm spring days have been so wonderful.  As I’m writing this it is chilly and rainy outside … makes me look forward to the many more warm spring days to come.

DSC00278

Colton was super excited when Daddy pulled the tractor out for the first time this spring.  He loves to help mow!  Claire… not so much.  She likes to sit on the mower and pretend to drive, but when it starts up she is ready to go inside.  She says, “the tractor is scurry” … the newest adjective she has added to her vocabulary in the last few weeks.

DSC00279

Claire also got her big introduction to bubbles earlier this spring.  We played with bubbles last spring, but she was around 12 months and really did not get the hang of it then.  We purchase new bubbles and blowers this year.  She and Colton were having fun blowing bubbles (so I thought) and I was preparing dinner in the kitchen… I look out the door to find this:

DSC00282

She was using the wand to put the bubble solution in her hair!

Seriously Claire!  Seriously!  I could not help, but to just laugh!

Saturday Morning Pancakes

April 19, 2012

Saturday’s are probably my favorite day of the week.  They are the most relaxed day of the week.  Most importantly the four of us are all together and the day almost always starts with buckwheat pancakes made with the helping hands of this cutie!

DSC00250

Yep, every Saturday morning Colton and Daddy measure, mix, and pour…

DSC00252

Colton knows what ingredients are needed and how much of each.  Be sure not to forget the cinnamon!

DSC00255

DSC00257DSC00259

Time to mix it up!

DSC00262

I know I’m partial, but these are seriously the best pancakes on the planet!

DSC00261

… and this little guy is the cutest boy on the planet!

Gingerbread

April 18, 2012

Colton loves to make (and eat) gingerbread men.  Two years ago at Christmas I could not find the mix so last Christmas when it went on the shelves I bought 6 packs!!  This way we can enjoy them all year round.  Sure, I could have made them from scratch, but shew… no time for that!

In case you have not noticed in other photos, Colton hates the flash on my camera.  So we get lots of squinting every time I attempt to take his photo!  I really need to learn to shoot in manual!

DSC00301

His favorite part of course is using the cookie cutters.

Of course Claire wanted in on the action… brother reluctantly obliged.

Knoxville Half Marathon–Half #2

April 13, 2012

After finishing my first half marathon last fall I knew immediately I wanted to do another!  I did not think that I would be doing another five months from then, but when my girlfriend Christine said she wanted to do the Knoxville Half I knew I wanted to run it with her!

Can you tell we were excited!?

DSC_0225DSC_0226

The most appealing aspect of this event is the finish.  You run inside Neyland stadium and finish on the 50 yard line.  For a Vols fan who is also a runner anything much more exciting!

The course starts at the famous Worlds Fair Park in downtown Knoxville.  This is the location of the 1982 World’s Fair.  The start was so much fun because a band was playing “Rocky Top” right past the starting line … in unison (sorta … ha ha) the 1700+ marathon/half marathon runners sang “Good ole Rocky Top! Whoooo! Rocky Top Tennessee”.  It was an exhilarating way to start my 13.1 mile journey.

Knoxville Half Course Map

The course is known to be rough and hilly!  I was fortunate enough to run eight miles of the course about halfway through my training.  I was not super familiar with the area I ran so it was a great way to prepare for the race.  What most people consider to be the most brutal part of of the race is the crazy hill at mile seven!  My guess is the hill is close to .40 of a mile and it is super steep!  As brutal as the hill is, this was one of my favorite parts of the course.  For one I was ready for it because I had ran it once before – I sort of knew what to expect… so once I reach the bottom of the hill I was pumped – the residence of Noelton Hill were all out in full swing cheering you on with a DJ pumping music as loud as he possibly could!  I ran that entire hill without looking back!  Bam!

This was the biggest race I have eve ran.  I really enjoyed the constant company of other runners.  Listening to random conversations kept me entertained and the occasional guy in the bushes offered a good laugh.  I generally run with one ear bud in – when I need that extra ump I usually put in the second … so around mile nine I popped in the second ear bud and started really listening to my playlist … it did not last long though.  I missed hearing all the sounds of the race so I took out the second ear bud and ran totally in the moment.

Before I knew it I was at mile 10 and my knees were not even stiff.  It was not until the NASTY hill at mile eleven that I hit a wall – I mean seriously!… who puts a hill like that at mile 11 of a 13 mile race!?  For me this was the toughest part of the race.  In no time though the opening to Neyland Stadium was in sight and a burst of energy came over me… I ran my heart out those last 50 yards.

DSC_0287

Chris did a great job of getting pictures at the finish!

DSC_0291

My time was about ten minutes slower than what I wanted, but I had been sick for two weeks so by the time race day was here I was simply happy to finish.  I can say now without hesitation that this will be a race I do every year!  Hopefully next year Chris will join me!

DSC_0322DSC_0318

If you live close and you love to run put the Knoxville Half (or Marathon or even 5k) on your calendar for next April.  You will not be disappointed!

Go Vols!!

Get Connected … while Disconnecting

April 10, 2012

Let me set the scene:

Chris sat at the booth with Colton and Claire as I went to order our food at one of our favorite fast casual restaurants.  As I’m standing in line I cannot help, but to notice, and stare, at the family of four in the booth right next to where I was standing.  The husband was sitting in the booth with his daughter, I’m guessing she was about eight years old.  He was playing a game on his IPad while the wife sat across from him holding and feeding what appeared to be about an 18 month old little boy.  I was so taken back by what I saw that I could not stop staring and struggled not to just shake my head in disbelief.

Dinner time for our family is what I believe to be one of the most important times of the day.  It is our preference for us to all be together eating at the same time around the table with little to no distractions.  It is then that we can enjoy our meal, fellowship with one another and talk about our day.  Colton usually takes this time to tell Chris what letter and number he did in school that day and then usually goes through his memory verses.  Chris fills me in on his day while asking about mine.  This is really one of the only times during the day (other than when we have breakfast together) that the four of us are all sitting down together with no outside distractions.

So yeah, when I saw this grown man sitting there at the table playing on his IPad I was really taken back.  I could not help, but to think about how disconnected we are all becoming.  Everywhere you look you see slogans such as “Get Connected” with links to companies/organizations Facebook pages, twitter accounts, and now even Pinterst Boards.  Just take the time to look around next time you’re in the grocery store, moms everywhere are shopping while glued to their smart phones paying no attention whatsoever to the two fussy toddlers in the shopping cart.  Maybe it is just me, but I find it so dis-heartening.

It took everything in me not to say to the guy, “put down your game and pay attention to your daughter!… or your wife!”.  Those conversations we have with our children, no matter how small or inadequate we think they may be, will leave lifetime impressions on them and will set the stage for how they mature into teenagers and young adults.  So I challenge you, put down the technology and spend a few extra moments in meaningful conversation with your loved ones.  Granted the conversations may be about Barbie dolls or dump trucks, but hey, if you are not going to talk to them who is??

Seriously, who takes their IPad into a restaurant anyway!?

Fun at Nana’s

April 9, 2012

Colton and Claire love going to Nana’s.  She lives on a big open farm so they can just run free with little restriction.  Colton loves that there are plenty of rocks to throw!

DSC_0001

Claire of course likes to climb… here she found a bunch of big rocks to climb up and down like steps.

DSC_0003

I love watching the two of them play together…

… and I love smiles like this one!

Weeds

April 5, 2012

Nana came over for a visit and in no time she had Colton and Claire in the dirt pulling up weeds.  My mother in law has quite the green thumb and loves any chance she has to plant flowers around her house or vegetables in her garden.  She is teaching these two at an early age because she knows I need all the help I can get! ha ha.

DSC_0079

The two of them went right to work and had so much fun!

DSC_0082

Claire was doing good until she got dirt in her shoes.  I guess putting her in Crocs with no socks while working in the dirt was not my smartest move.

DSC_0075     DSC_0076

Claire does this same thing looking for toe fuzz every night before bath time.  I love the picture below… Colton was too involved in watching Claire to pay a bit of attention to where the dirt was landing.

Ahh… all in a hard days work :)

The Park

April 4, 2012

The Spring weather has been so incredible.  Last week Colton was on Spring Break and we spent almost everyday at the park.

DSC_0083

Claire is big enough now that I can let her play on the play set with very little supervision.  Makes going to the park a lot easier for mom!  This way I am freed up to snap lot of photos.

DSC_0088

Colton is really coming into his own.  Last summer/fall we had to really encourage him to go down the bigger slides (he has always been timid), but now he runs around like he owns the place :)

DSC_0087

Claire, well she is not timid at all.  She is my free spirited child.  The one thing she enjoys the most at the park is to go up and down the steps.  When she hears the word park the first thing she says is, “steps!”.  So for about 30 minutes she climbed up and down the steps and ran across the bridge.  Every once in a while she would run and give momma a big hug!

I love these days!
